The Real Da Vinci Code: The
Vitruvian Man, the Last Supper and Wholeness
by Allen Rubin
Leonardo said it best: "The
outstretched arms and legs of a man form a square and a circle: the
square symbolizes the solid physical world and the circle the
spiritual and eternal. Man bridges the gap between these two
worlds." -Leonardo Da Vinci, "The Magical Proportions of Man"
Leonardo Da Vinci's
Vitruvian Man (the Da Vinci Man with four arms and four legs in a
square and circle) is the most popular secular symbol in the world.
My ten years of research suggests that the Vitruvian Man is a
universal symbol for greater love, relationships, success, health
and the new age 21st century paradigm of indivisible wholeness, the
paradigm for world peace. The New Renaissance!
The Da Vinci Man is a
universal translator between scientific models (represented by the
Da Vinci Man in the square) and religious symbols (represented by
the Da Vinci Man in the circle). Therefore, the Vitruvian Man (Da
Vinci Man) is a bridge between science and religion. There are
amazing similarities between the sacred geometry of the Da Vinci
Man, Yin-Yang, Star of David, Tree of Life, Christian Cross and
Angels.
A Miracle of the Last Supper
The refectory (dining hall) at the Santa Maria delle Grazie, where
the Last Supper is painted, was bombed during WWII in 1943. The Last
Supper was protected by sandbags and miraculously survived
unscathed. The refectory was rebuilt after the war, and a
twenty-year restoration of the Last Supper was begun. Centuries of
poor quality restorations were removed and, in 1987, the Last
Supper, very close to what Leonardo originally intended, was
revealed.
The Embrace of the Divine
Feminine Within Each Man And the Divine Masculine Within Each Woman
What does the figure of John
represent in Leonardo's version of the Last Supper? Is John Mary
Magdalene or someone else? Does the Da Vinci Person represent the
embrace of our masculine and feminine nature?
The Da Vinci Person is
actually a secret code that represents the integration of each
person's feminine with his or her masculine nature. The masculine
anchor, represented by the Da Vinci form with arms outstretched, is
balanced by the feminine flow, represented by the Da Vinci form with
arms uplifted.
Any good marriage is also an
embrace or union of masculine and feminine. In a successful marriage
a man learns to support his wife's needs and a woman learns to
support her husband's needs. A great marriage feels like the Da
Vinci form, with four arms and four legs working as one. Life
becomes easier.
Central to the teaching of
the book, The Da Vinci Code, John is actually a representation of
Mary Magdalene. The fact that the figure of John is an almost mirror
image of Jesus in (a) position, and (b) clothing, and that (c) their
mutual position outlines an M representing marriage, does support
the closeness of this figure with Jesus.
Although it cannot be proven
that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene, I believe there is an even
more important message that Leonardo is trying to convey: the
embrace of both our Divine Masculine and Feminine nature. This
message is immediate and relevant to everyone.
Judaism (Adonai Elohim),
Hinduism (Shiva-Shakti) and Taoism (Yin-Yang) accept the concept of
the Divine as half male and half female. Christianity accepts a
Divine relationship between Many and Jesus. Does the Eastern
Orthodox Church attribute feminine qualities to the Holy Spirit? In
Judaism (Kabbalah) the Holy Spirit is represented by the feminine
Shechinah, the Bride Sabbath or Presence of God.
The concept of the feminine
as Divine has been resurrected by the Catholic Church in the sense
that Jesus and Mary are considered to be close in heaven. Jesus is
married to the Church, which is represented by Mary. Also, Pope John
Paul II honored Mother Mary and raised her status considerably. The
black Madonna is revered in Poland, and Pope John Paul II credits
Mother Mary, as Fatimah, with saving his life. The Rosary worship of
Mary as intercessor was actually begun by St Dominic. The
Dominican's inhabited the Santa Maria del Grazie, the Church where
Leonardo painted the Last Supper.
Unfortunately, in 591 AD,
Pope Gregory popularized the myth that Mary Magdalene was a
prostitute. This was done through a misinterpretation of the
biblical text. The account of Mary Magdalene is juxtaposed to the
story of a woman who was a prostitute. This mistaken notion has been
corrected. The Catholic Church ruled, in 1969, that Mary was not a
prostitute. She was the Apostle to the Apostles.
However, a great deal of
damage had already been done regarding the representation of the
feminine in the Christian church. For centuries women, though
honored by the church, were not accorded equal status with men. This
further degraded the image of the feminine, already suspect with the
interpretation of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.
This repression of the
feminine is also brutal to men as it disallows men to identify with
their own feminine nature. This leads to clarity without compassion
and a lack of kindness in the world. The inner nature of the
masculine is feminine. The inner nature of the feminine is
masculine. Lack of identification with our male/female counterpart
cuts us off from our inner nature and destroys our inner peace.
A person's embrace of their
masculine and feminine nature is a natural and healthy part of
spiritual growth. As we grow older, men become softer and women
become clearer. The strong Grandmother and kindly, laid back
Grandfather is a natural progression in human personal growth.
If, as modern psychologists
believe, our nature is half masculine and half feminine, a total
embrace of both aspects is needed in order to achieve inner peace.
This is the union of the anima and animus of Carl Jung and the
embrace of the Yin-Yang within.
If a person is cut off from
the union of the masculine and feminine nature inside them, it leads
to a disintegration of the personality. However, if a person
embraces both their feminine and masculine nature, it leads to
integration, inner peace and spiritual growth. Only this embrace
will lead to peace on earth and good will towards all. This
integration of our masculine and feminine nature is represented in
the union of the two forms of the Da Vinci Person.
