An eleven-year old Yogi walked out of his home one night in 1792 carrying little more than his prayer beads. Seven years later, he had walked 8,000 miles across the Indian subcontinent, having endured the bitter cold of the Himalayan Mountains and the scorching heat of the Indian desert.

A new giant-screen IMAX movie, Mystic India, captures the epic journey of Neelkanth, from the start of his seven-year journey to his being named Shajanand Swami (Lord Swaminarayan). Along the way, we witness many of India's most spectacular sacred sites, temples and dazzling festivals.

We learn about India's important contributions, such as the concept of zero and the invention of the decimal system. We see the amazing rock-cut Kailas Temple at Ellora, the world's largest monolithic monument, carved from a hill of solid stone by 7,000 craftsmen over a span of 150 years.

Scene from the IMAX movie "Mystic India"Neelkanth's ability to survive, barefoot and dressed in nothing but a loincloth, in the bitter cold of the Himalayas may have been due to the system of meditation known as "Tum-mo" or "inner fire." A study by Harvard Medical School has shown that this system of meditation can raise people's temperatures by as much as 17 degrees.

Neelkanth's journey helped transform the society of 18th century India. He taught social equality and non-violence, urging people to treat women with respect and helping to end the practice of female infanticide. He dug wells and ponds for the poor and personally distributed food to the needy. Before his death in 1830, Neelkanth had constructed six beautiful temples.

The central theme of Mystic India is that there can be unity in diversity; that we all share the same sky, walk the same earth, breathe the same air; that we are a single human family, capable of living together and loving one another.
